Description
Description
The Minn Kota Edge 45 is a bow-mount trolling motor for freshwater fishing boats. It delivers 45 lb of thrust on a 12-volt system through a 45-inch shaft, with a hand-control tiller you steer directly from the bow.
Will it fit my boat?
The 45-inch shaft suits most bass boats and aluminum fishing boats where the bow deck sits roughly 20-26 inches above the waterline. Measure from the top of your bow mounting surface down to the water: you want the motor head to clear the deck while the prop stays fully submerged in chop.
Freshwater only. The Edge series is not rated for saltwater or brackish use. If you fish salt, the Riptide series is the correct family.
Why the Edge over a budget transom motor
Bow-mount placement pulls the boat rather than pushing it, which holds a line far better in wind and current. The Edge adds two things a budget motor does not have: a tempered marine-grade extruded aluminum mount that is strong without adding weight, and a composite shaft that is guaranteed for life. The shaft flexes on impact instead of bending or kinking, so a rock strike does not end your day.
Features
- 45 lb thrust, 12V, 5 forward and 3 reverse speeds
- Indestructible composite shaft, guaranteed for life - flexes on impact, will not break or kink
- Tempered marine-grade extruded aluminum mount
- Latch and door design with soft-grip knob and positive rear stow latch
- Motor head in high-impact hybrid composite
- Extendable Tilt Twist tiller control
- 2-year warranty
Choosing your thrust and shaft
The rule of thumb is about 2 lb of thrust per 100 lb of fully loaded boat weight. At 45 lb of thrust the Edge 45 suits boats up to roughly 2,200 lb loaded. Heavier boats, or boats fished in consistent wind, should step up to the Edge 55 or the 24V Edge 70.
What is included
- Edge 45 trolling motor with 45" composite shaft
- Bow mount with latch and door
- Weedless Wedge 2 propeller, installed
- Hardware and owner documentation
Installation
The Edge bolts directly to a flat bow deck. You will need a 12V deep-cycle marine battery (not a starting battery), a 50-amp circuit breaker between battery and motor, and a trolling motor plug and receptacle if you want to remove the motor without unbolting the leads. Most anglers mount a quick-release bracket so the motor lifts off for trailering and storage.

Questions
Do I need one battery or two?
One. The Edge 45 is a 12V motor and runs on a single 12V deep-cycle marine battery. The 24V Edge 70 is the model that requires two.
Can I use my cranking battery?
No. Use a deep-cycle marine battery. A starting battery is built for short high-amperage bursts and will be damaged by the sustained draw of a trolling motor.
Is a circuit breaker required?
Yes. Minn Kota specifies a 50-amp breaker or fuse in the positive lead. It protects the motor and the wiring, and most insurance and ABYC-aligned rigging expects it.
Hand control or foot control?
Hand control keeps you at the bow with direct tiller steering and costs less. Foot control frees both hands for casting. This model is hand control.
Can I run this in saltwater?
No. The Edge series is freshwater-rated only. Saltwater exposure will corrode it and voids the warranty.
