Description
Description
A fiberglass water lift muffler with a 45-degree outlet angle and 2-inch inlet and outlet, for gas or diesel inboard engines, sailboat auxiliaries and marine generators. It quiets exhaust noise and, more importantly, stops cooling water from running back into the engine when it shuts down.
Measure before you order
Water lift mufflers are dimensional parts. Getting the hose size right is necessary but not sufficient - the unit also has to physically fit the space and the outlet angle has to point where your exhaust hose needs to go. Check your hose inside diameter (this unit is 2 inches in and 2 inches out), then confirm the body dimensions in the table below against the space you have. A 45-degree unit is the right choice when a straight outlet would force a tight bend in the exhaust hose.
What a water lift muffler does
On a wet exhaust system the engine discharges hot exhaust gas and cooling water together. The water lift muffler collects that water in a chamber and uses exhaust pressure to lift and expel it. Two things follow: the water column absorbs a large share of the exhaust noise, and when the engine stops there is a reservoir below the exhaust line so residual water drains into the muffler instead of back down the exhaust into an open valve. That second function is the one that prevents hydrolock - the failure mode that puts water in a cylinder and can destroy an engine.
Why this one
Centek builds the Vernalift to a high-strength design that provides a significant safety margin over other fiberglass lift mufflers, and it exceeds ABYC specifications. It carries a "Better" sound rating and can be installed above or below the waterline, which gives you more freedom in where it goes than units restricted to one or the other.

Questions
How do I know what size I need?
Match the inside diameter of your existing exhaust hose. This unit takes 2-inch hose on both the inlet and the outlet. Do not size up or down at the muffler - change hose size elsewhere in the run if you have to.
Straight or 45-degree?
Choose based on where the exhaust hose has to go after the muffler. A 45-degree outlet lets you turn the run without kinking the hose. If your hose exits in a straight line, a straight unit is simpler.
Can this go below the waterline?
Yes. The Vernalift is rated for installation above or below the waterline.
Will this quiet my exhaust noticeably?
Yes. Centek rates this unit "Better" for sound. The water column in the chamber absorbs a substantial part of the exhaust note.
What happens if I do not replace a failed muffler?
A cracked or collapsed lift muffler can allow cooling water to drain back toward the engine on shutdown. If water reaches a cylinder through an open exhaust valve the result is hydrolock, which can bend a rod or crack a head. Replace it rather than patch it.
