How to Choose the Right Propeller for Your Boat

The right propeller can improve acceleration, handling, fuel efficiency, load carrying, and top speed. However, a propeller should never be selected by boat type or horsepower alone.

First, the propeller must physically fit your engine, sterndrive, or propeller shaft. Then you can choose the material, blade count, diameter, and pitch that best match your boat and how you use it.

1. What type of propulsion does your boat have?

Outboard motor

This includes Mercury, Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Johnson/Evinrude, Tohatsu, Nissan, and other outboards. Start with the engine manufacturer, model, horsepower, year, and gearcase size.

Most outboard boats will use:

  • Solas fixed-hub propellers

  • Solas Rubex interchangeable-hub propellers

  • Turning Point Hustler or Express propellers

  • Select Quicksilver propellers

Single-prop sterndrive

Boats with compatible MerCruiser Alpha One, Bravo One, Volvo Penta SX, or similar sterndrives may use select Solas, Turning Point, or Quicksilver propellers. Confirm the drive model and gear ratio before ordering.

MerCruiser Bravo Three dual-prop drive

Choose only propellers specifically marked for the Bravo Three. This system uses separate front and rear counter-rotating propellers that must be correctly matched.

Marine Cobra carries select Solas and Quicksilver Bravo Three propellers. Do not substitute a standard single-prop model.

Direct-drive or V-drive inboard

Traditional ski boats, wake boats, surf boats, and some inboard cruisers generally use a propeller mounted directly to a propeller shaft.

Shop ACME propellers using:

  • Boat make, model, and year

  • Engine and transmission

  • Gear ratio

  • Shaft bore or spline

  • Left- or right-hand rotation

  • Current diameter, pitch, and cup

ACME propellers are commonly used on inboard boats from brands such as Malibu, MasterCraft, Nautique, and Centurion, but the exact ACME part number must be matched to the specific boat.

Jet boat, personal watercraft, or trolling motor

These do not use the conventional boat propellers in this collection. Jet drives use impellers, while trolling motors require manufacturer-specific trolling motor props.

Choose by Boat Type and Performance Goal

Boat type helps determine the best blade design, but it does not determine whether the propeller will fit your engine.

Understanding Marine Cobra’s Propeller Families

Solas Fixed-Hub Propellers

Fixed-hub Solas propellers have a traditional pressed-in rubber hub. Their product titles normally identify the intended engine manufacturer.

Amita 3 Aluminum

A versatile and affordable 3-blade propeller for fishing boats, pontoons, runabouts, and general recreational use. It offers a good balance of acceleration, cruising, and top-end performance.

Amita 4 Aluminum

A 4-blade option for improved acceleration, stern lift, handling, and performance with heavier loads. It is a strong choice for watersports, tri-toons, deck boats, and heavily loaded family boats.

New Saturn Stainless Steel

An all-around stainless-steel 3-blade propeller with good acceleration and a larger blade design. It works well for boaters who want a more durable, responsive alternative to aluminum.

Titan and HR Titan Stainless Steel

High-rake performance propellers intended for faster planing hulls. The 3-blade versions emphasize bow lift, acceleration, and top speed, while the 4-blade versions provide additional stern lift, grip, and load-carrying performance.

Lexor Stainless Steel

A large-blade-area propeller intended for larger boats. It is especially suitable for bay boats, offshore boats, heavier center consoles, and other applications that need strong midrange performance and efficient cruising.

Solas Rubex Interchangeable-Hub Propellers

Rubex propellers use a separate RBX hub kit. The propeller housing determines the diameter, pitch, material, and blade design, while the hub kit matches it to the engine.

Important: A Rubex propeller normally requires the correct RBX hub kit, sold separately.

Rubex 3 Aluminum

A good all-around choice for fishing boats, pontoons, runabouts, and general recreational boating.

Rubex 4 Aluminum

Designed for stronger acceleration, stern lift, handling, and load carrying. Consider it for watersports, tri-toons, deck boats, and heavier loads.

Rubex Double Cup

Double-cupped blades provide additional bite and holding power. These props can be useful when improving acceleration, reducing slip, or maintaining grip is more important than maximum top speed.

Rubex NS3 Stainless Steel

A smaller-gearcase stainless propeller offering balanced acceleration and all-around performance for compatible midrange outboards.

Rubex HR3 Stainless Steel

A high-rake 3-blade propeller for fast planing hulls. It is intended to produce bow lift, acceleration, top speed, and reduced slip.

Rubex HR4 Stainless Steel

A 4-blade performance propeller offering stern lift, smooth thrust, acceleration, midrange efficiency, and better load carrying.

Rubex Hydro Stainless Steel

A high-performance, high-efficiency propeller for compatible larger outboards. It is a good option for larger fishing boats, bay boats, center consoles, and other applications where midrange efficiency and overall performance matter.

Turning Point Propellers

Turning Point propeller housings use the appropriate MasterGuard installation or hub kit to match the engine. Always confirm both the propeller series and required hub kit.

Hustler 3-Blade Aluminum

An affordable all-around propeller with good bow lift and top-end performance. Marine Cobra carries models for small, midrange, and larger gearcases.

Good applications include:

Hustler 4-Blade Aluminum

Express Mach3 Stainless Steel

A performance-oriented 3-blade stainless propeller. Choose it when bow lift, acceleration, top speed, and efficient cruising are priorities.

Available applications include smaller outboards as well as larger 4.25- and 4.75-inch gearcases.

Express Mach4 Stainless Steel

A performance 4-blade propeller designed for acceleration, stern lift, handling, rough-water stability, and carrying heavier loads.

It is especially well suited for:

  • Tri-toons

  • Watersports

  • Bay boats

  • Sterndrive boats

  • Heavy passenger or gear loads

ACME Inboard Propellers

ACME propellers are intended primarily for conventional inboard shaft-drive boats, including direct-drive and V-drive ski, wake, and surf boats.

An ACME propeller must match the boat’s:

  • Shaft bore or spline

  • Rotation

  • Diameter

  • Pitch

  • Cup

  • Hub length

  • Transmission and gear ratio

Do not select an ACME propeller simply because another boat uses the same diameter and pitch. ACME part numbers are developed for specific boat, engine, transmission, and performance combinations.

Quicksilver Propellers

Quicksilver Q4

A 4-blade stainless-steel propeller for select Mercury outboard and sterndrive applications. It is intended for boaters seeking stronger acceleration, grip, load carrying, and handling. Verify the listed Command Thrust designation, horsepower range, pitch, and hub requirements.

Quicksilver Bravo Three

These are drive-specific propellers for MerCruiser Bravo Three dual-prop systems. Confirm whether the listing is for the front or rear position and match it to the correct companion propeller.

Aluminum or Stainless Steel?

Choose aluminum when you want:

  • A more affordable replacement

  • Good everyday performance

  • A spare propeller to keep onboard

  • A practical option for shallow or debris-filled water

  • Lower replacement cost after damage

Choose stainless steel when you want:

  • Stiffer, thinner blades

  • Better grip and reduced blade flex

  • More precise high-performance designs

  • Improved acceleration, handling, or efficiency

  • Greater resistance to normal wear

A stainless-steel propeller is not automatically faster. The correct pitch, diameter, blade design, and engine RPM remain more important than material alone.

Three Blades or Four?

Choose a 3-blade propeller for:

  • Balanced all-around performance

  • Efficient cruising

  • Bow lift

  • Higher top-end potential

  • Lighter or moderately loaded boats

Choose a 4-blade propeller for:

  • Faster hole shot

  • Better grip in turns

  • Stern lift

  • Watersports

  • Heavy passenger or gear loads

  • Rough-water handling

  • Maintaining speed with a loaded boat

A 4-blade propeller may slightly reduce maximum speed in some applications, although modern designs can minimize that tradeoff.

What Do Diameter and Pitch Mean?

A propeller marked 14 x 19 has approximately a 14-inch diameter and 19 inches of pitch.

Diameter is the total width of the circle made by the blade tips. Larger diameters generally provide more blade area for heavier boats and larger gearcases.

Pitch is the theoretical distance the propeller would travel forward in one revolution without slip.

  • More pitch generally lowers wide-open-throttle RPM.

  • Less pitch generally raises RPM and improves acceleration.

  • Too much pitch can overload the engine.

  • Too little pitch can allow the engine to exceed its recommended RPM range.

The final propeller should allow the engine to operate within the manufacturer’s recommended wide-open-throttle RPM range with the boat carrying its normal load.

Information Needed to Select a Propeller

Before ordering, gather:

  1. Boat manufacturer, model, year, and length

  2. Engine or drive manufacturer, model, year, and horsepower

  3. Gearcase or sterndrive model

  4. Gear ratio, if available

  5. Current propeller part number

  6. Current diameter, pitch, blade count, and rotation

  7. Current wide-open-throttle RPM and speed

  8. Manufacturer’s recommended WOT RPM range

  9. Typical passenger, fuel, and equipment load

  10. Whether you want better acceleration, cruising efficiency, load carrying, or top speed
